Electrical sub-stations

CIMA+ has participated in the expansion of Quebec's electrical network through the design of hundreds of electrical supply stations, offering a full range of services as needed by its clients for their continued growth, and in particular:

  • electricity supply
  • network management
  • equipment protection

Our specialists can intervene in all aspects of these items:

  • devices
  • protection
  • control
  • automatic control systems
  • auxiliary services
  • structure and civil engineering
  • buildings
  • telecommunications

CIMA+ has been able to draw on this experience to export its know-how worldwide to other public entities, large industries or the suppliers of major equipment such as ABB, GE, Siemens and AREVA.

ABB Synchronous Condensers
Copper Mountain Substation

Murdochville

The project consisted of installing two ABB 25 MVAR synchronous condensers at Copper Mountain substation.

These condensers serve to integrate the wind power from the Copper Mountain (54 MW) and Miller Mountain (54 MW) wind farms.

They also support the voltage on Hydro-Québec 161 kV system and respond promptly to sudden voltage fluctuations. The synchronous condensers are essential to maintain wind farms production.

CIMA+ performed integration studies and analyzed the condensers impacts on Hydro-Québec Power System:

  • Assessment of harmonic emissions (power quality)
  • Validation of the electrical parameters and specifications of the condensers
  • Modelling and design of the automatic voltage regulator and the excitation system
  • Protection coordination study, relay setting and implementation for the installation

ArcelorMittal Mines Canada
Electric Arc Exposure Study

The project consisted of a study of electric arc exposure risks in order to classify electrical equipment at facilities belonging to the ArcelorMittal Mines Canada mining company, based on the CSA Z462-08 standard. These risk levels determine the personal protective equipment that workers must wear for live-line work on each type of electrical equipment.

CIMA+ modelled the network, completed a detailed electric arc exposure study and made recommendations.

ABB Wuskwatim Complex - Manitoba Hydro

Thompson, Manitoba

This project involved the construction of two new 230 kV stations, Wuskwatim and Birchtree, as well as the modification of four existing stations for the transmission of electricity from a new hydroelectric plant. Approximately 200 MW of electricity will be produced and transported to southern Manitoba.

CIMA+ provided complete engineering services for network control, protection and studies for the six stations.

Modular electrical sub-stations

ABB, Fort McMurray, Alberta

CIMA+ designed modular electrical sub-stations for the petroleum industry, specifically for ABB. These designs allowed the offsite construction of equipment when it would have been very costly to assemble it on-site.

All of the work completed for ABB included the buildings, the medium and low voltage distribution system, variable frequency controllers, harmonic filters, AC and DC current, PLC supervision and the operator interface, as well as HVAC units.

Modernisation of electrical installations

Port of Montreal

For more than 15 years, CIMA+ has offered the services required by the Port of Montreal for its 26 kilometre long electrical distribution network.

Addition of a 450 MVA station and protection study

Kruger, Trois-Rivières

In the context of a major program to increase capacity at the Trois-Rivières plant, Kruger asked CIMA+ to build their new power supply station.

The project included the installation of:

  • two incoming lines of 230 kV
  • a 150 MVA 230/120 kV transformer
  • a 150 MVA 230/120/69 kV transformer
  • a 150 MVA 230/69 kV transformer
  • a 58 MVA 69/13.8 kV transformer

All detailed engineering services were delivered, which allowed the pre-purchase of major equipment and protection control consoles.

Furthermore, since CIMA+ has long-term experience in the study of electrical networks, such as short-circuits, coordination, power flow, harmonics and electric arc defect studies, we also provided Kruger with the services needed to prepare a full protection study of its electrical network.

Rehabilitation of the electrical network

IOC Mining Company, Sept-Îles

CIMA+ supports clients undertaking updating projects on their electrical infrastructure, while limiting the impact on production.

Within the framework of the sequential renovation of the 46 kV and 4.16 kV electrical network owned by IOC Mining Company, CIMA+ provided the following services:

  • complete surveys
  • master plans
  • detailed engineering
  • site surveillance

New electrical sub-station

SCA, Drummondville

In order to help clients manage their growth, CIMA+ offers integrated plant expansion and capacity increase solutions, for electrical facilities.

SCA of Drummondville wanted to expand their facilities to over 100,000 sq ft, which required the addition of two new 25 kV electrical sub-stations.

CIMA+ provided SCA with integrated solutions for the expansion and increased electrical capacity. The services offered included, specifically:

  • preliminary design
  • estimated budget
  • detailed engineering
  • pre-purchasing
  • request for tender
  • construction management
  • commissioning assistance
