Paddock reconstruction for the F1 Grand Prix du Canada

Even though this project was completed in May 2019, the new building was already bestowed in December 2018 the Award of Excellence by Canadian Architect. “The structure is a powerful branding icon for the site and F1, putting architecture on par with the captivating spectator sport, all while showing a capacity for restraint” Monica Adair, member of the jury.

As part of a renewal agreement until 2029 for the Canadian Grand Prix, the City of Montreal committed to replace the temporary structures used for the race on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve with a permanent building. The timeline for this almost $60 M project was very tight since it needed to be completed in the ten-month period between the 2018 and 2019 editions of the Montreal Grand Prix.

The new paddocks include garages for the racing teams, offices for the Fédération internationale de l’automobile, which organizes the event, rooms for the race sponsors, lounge space for 5,000 people, compared to 1,800 in the previous building, and a media centre for journalists and broadcasters. Contrary to other international Grand Prix facilities, CIMA+ designed the lounge areas with no exterior walls and no air conditioning. Furthermore, finishes are minimal, and solar panels provide electricity for lighting. The open-air lounges bring guests closer to the sights and sounds of the adjacent raceway.

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is located on Île Notre-Dame, an integral part of Parc Jean-Drapeau. For more information on the new Formula 1 paddocks, click here.
