With a career built on curiosity, collaboration and a deep passion for engineering, Jeff Hynes has become a driving force behind CIMA+’s growth in Atlantic Canada. As Director of the region, Jeff provides not only technical expertise, but also a strong commitment to mentorship, teamwork and meaningful project delivery. Since joining CIMA+ in 2015, he has played a key role in shaping both projects and people across the country.
In this interview, Jeff reflects on the moments that sparked his passion, the values that guide his leadership, and why the Atlantic team’s “small but mighty” spirit makes all the difference.
Why did you choose engineering and why is it meaningful to you?
I always had a passion for math and science as a student. In high school, I took a career aptitude test that suggested engineering was the best fit for my skills and interests. High school gym teacher came in second! What ultimately drew me to engineering was the opportunity to solve real-world problems and see ideas come to life.
To me, engineering is about using our knowledge and skills to make the world a better place—whether that means improving quality of life for people or protecting the environment. It’s a profession in which the impact of your work is tangible. You can truly see the difference it makes in communities and the daily lives of others. That sense of purpose is what makes engineering so meaningful to me.

What do you find most rewarding about your work and what fuels your passion?
I’ve always enjoyed working hands-on with contractors and taking designs off the page and into the field. That tangible aspect of engineering—seeing the direct impact of our work—is so satisfying. But the most rewarding part of my work is helping to shape the careers of young engineers and technologists. Seeing them grow, develop their skills and find their path within their field of expertise is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a privilege to support their professional journey and watch them take on new challenges with confidence.
My passion for engineering has grown steadily throughout my career. When I first began university, I didn’t fully grasp the breadth and depth of what engineers contribute to society. But as I gained experience and took on new challenges, I developed a deep appreciation for the impact we can have. That sense of purpose continues to inspire me every day—and my passion for the field is stronger now than ever before.
What are your greatest achievements in the industry, and at CIMA+?
One of my proudest professional achievements has been earning a partnership at CIMA+ and taking on the role of Director for the Atlantic region. It’s the result of many years of dedication, growth and collaboration, and it’s incredibly rewarding to contribute to the company’s success in this leadership role. In the broader industry, I take pride in the relationships I’ve built, the complex projects I’ve helped bring to life, and the role I’ve played in mentoring emerging professionals along the way.
How would you describe your sector? What is its greatest asset/strength?
The Energy and Resources sector at CIMA+ offers clients a holistic, integrated approach to their projects. By combining expertise across disciplines, we’re able to provide solutions that are both innovative and tailored—something I believe sets us apart from other firms.
Our greatest strength lies in our collaborative culture. We operate as a unified team, working seamlessly across provinces to deliver high-quality engineering solutions. My own team regularly partners with colleagues from coast to coast, and that national synergy is a key part of what makes our work so effective and gratifying.
What do you see as the industry with the most potential for the future?
With the growing global demand for critical minerals, mining is rapidly emerging as one of the most vital and dynamic industries in Canada. These resources are essential to the energy transition and future technologies, and Canada is well positioned to play a leading role. We’re already seeing a surge in opportunities in this sector, and I have no doubt that this momentum will continue to grow in the years ahead.
What sets the CIMA+ Atlantic team apart from the competition?
I often say that in the Atlantic region, “we’re small, but mighty,” and that spirit defines who we are. There’s a genuine sense of care and support among our team members, which creates a strong, collaborative environment. We also take great pride in the quality of our work, consistently delivering top-tier designs and engineering solutions to our clients. It’s that combination of close-knit culture and professional excellence that distinguishes us.
How would you describe the perfect project?
A perfect project is one that successfully meets all of its objectives, whether that’s staying on budget, delivering on schedule or achieving the desired quality. Just as important, if not more so, is ensuring there are no injuries and no negative impact on the environment.
When a project wraps up and the client not only expresses their satisfaction but also offers us new opportunities, that’s when you know you’ve truly delivered excellence.
What’s your hobby to unwind? What do you do to take your mind off things on the weekend?
Cooking is one of my favourite ways to unwind. I’m always exploring new recipes, but I have a particular passion for Italian cuisine. I enjoy making my own pasta from scratch, whether it’s fettuccine, ravioli or gnocchi. It’s both relaxing and enriching. I also enjoy getting out for a round of golf with friends. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of hitting a great shot on a sunny weekend.
