97th Street – Whitemud Drive Overpass

When Edmonton’s busy 97th Street Overpass was due for rehabilitation, CIMA+’s bridge team stepped in to devise a solution.

Located directly adjacent to the Strathcona, Papaschase, Coronet, and McIntyre Industrial areas in Edmonton, Alberta, the 97th Street Whitemud Drive Overpass accommodates dense traffic, and provides a pedestrian and cyclist crossing over Whitemud Drive, with bicycle lanes heading in each direction and a sidewalk along the east side. The bridge is a North-South grade separated connection in southeast Edmonton.

This project was born from the need to develop a preliminary rehabilitation strategy for the bridge, which had not been updated since its original construction in 1980. The rehabilitation strategy was based on the findings of a condition assessment carried out on the 97 Street Bridge. CIMA+ was hired to conduct desktop reviews, field inspections, and structural evaluation and load ratings of the existing structure. This work enabled our team to identify structural deficiencies and facilitate preliminary rehabilitation planning for the overpass. CIMA+ ultimately recommended that the priority work be completed within the next five years and provided optional rehabilitation strategies to reduce the need for future maintenance.
