The New Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre in Surrey, British Columbia, will be a next-generation, sustainable healthcare facility for one of the province’s fastest-growing communities. Spanning nearly one million square feet, the project aims to expand access to critical services—including emergency, surgical, inpatient and cancer care—as well as integrate advanced digital and virtual technologies to improve patient outcomes and healthcare system efficiency.
As part of the Design-Build team, CIMA+ is providing sustainability consulting and LEED project management, supporting the delivery of a high-performance, low-carbon facility. The CIMA+ team is responsible for developing and tracking LEED strategies, coordinating documentation and aligning architectural, mechanical and electrical systems with ambitious sustainability targets.
Going all-electric for low-carbon healthcare
Designed as one of the first all-electric hospitals in British Columbia, the facility prioritizes energy efficiency, low-carbon operation and climate resilience. By combining innovative clinical care, digital integration and sustainable design, the project establishes a new benchmark for resilient, low-carbon healthcare infrastructure in Canada that delivers long-term environmental, social and operational value.
The hospital eliminates on-site fossil fuel use while prioritizing energy efficiency and reduced operational carbon emissions. It is engineered to maintain continuity of care even under extreme conditions, including seismic events, flooding and public health emergencies.
Integrated building systems support complex clinical functions without compromising performance or reliability. Through careful coordination of mechanical, electrical and digital infrastructure, the design balances high energy demands with sustainability goals, establishing a scalable model for resilient, low-carbon healthcare facilities in Canada.
