Ensuring effective traffic and transit management, and energy storage for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in Toronto

CIMA+ was retained by Crosslinx Transit Solutions to play a critical role in the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Toronto, Ontario. This included managing traffic and transit operations during construction in order to minimize disruptions, engineering and implementing a state-of-the-art energy storage system ensuring reliable LRT operations and compliance with safety, accessibility and operational standards throughout the project’s development.

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT project is a 19-kilometre transit corridor that aims to enhance public transportation efficiency in Toronto by reducing travel times across the city by up to 60%. The project aligns with the City’s sustainability and efficiency goals while simultaneously overcoming complex urban infrastructure challenges.

Completed in 2025, this major decades-long infrastructure project required the implementation of traffic and transit management strategies to maintain safe and smooth operations across the city. The network now includes 25 new stations and stops to improve connectivity, and a battery energy storage system (BESS) for enhanced power reliability.

Improving mobility, safety and accessibility for all

Given the highly urbanized and congested environment of the city of Toronto, there were major challenges for the CIMA+ team to overcome in effectively managing traffic and transit:

  • Ensuring the safety of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians in work zones at major arterial intersections like Eglinton Avenue East at Don Mills Road and Kennedy Road
  • Managing high pedestrian volumes, especially near public high schools and institutions like the Canadian Institute for the Blind
  • Developing constructability solutions for the seven-kilometre at-grade LRT segment as well as for the open cut construction of the Science Centre and Kennedy underground stations
  • Applying Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) compliance measures for temporary sidewalks and traffic signals

Our team played an integral part in construction staging and constructability reviews, temporary road and traffic signal designs, traffic detour planning and transit operation assessments, collision data analyses and safety assessments as well as providing support during construction to mitigate disruptions.

Banking power today for energy on-demand tomorrow

CIMA+ also played a key role in integrating a 10 MW / 30 MWh BESS to provide emergency power for the LRT system in case of outages. This innovative energy solution ensures increased reliability of transit services by providing backup power, cost savings by storing and using energy during peak demand periods, and a reduced carbon footprint by optimizing energy use.
