Once completed, the 67 km REM network will serve 26 stations on four lines: Rive-Sud, Deux-Montagnes, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue and Aéroport International Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau.

This fully automated electric light rail system will be the fourth largest of its kind in the world. Its ingenious layout includes overhead, underground and surface segments.

Our multidisciplinary expertise enabled us to ensure the smooth execution of the project, in collaboration with our partners. Our role was to provide engineering consulting services and to support the client’s team, CDPQ Infra, in the bidding process for the “engineering-procurement-construction” (EPC) and “rolling stock and systems and operation and maintenance (RSSOM) contracts.

Quality assurance, project management

Our project managers provided high-quality professional services to ensure rigorous monitoring of the design, construction and commissioning of REM, notably through the smooth and efficient integration of the various components. In addition, we played a key role in managing, monitoring and coordinating the critical interfaces between the EPC and RSSOM contracts.

Our technical experts supported CDPQ Infra representatives in managing changes and additional work requirements.

Our commitment towards excellence and our attention to detail have enabled us to play a key role in the success of the REM project, to which we will continue to contribute until its completion.

Transportation

Thanks to its expertise in mobility, our Transportation team played a key role in bringing the REM project to fruition, helping to create an optimal travel experience. We carried out exhaustive studies on travel patterns, modeling and mode selection, as well as the design of bus terminals and park-and-ride facilities.

Our specialized teams in railway, highway and structural engineering, as well as engineering structures (bridges, walls and tunnels) played an essential role in supporting the client throughout the design and construction process of the 26 new REM stations, to ensure safe, robust installations that meet the highest standards.

We also took charge of traffic management during the construction phase, to minimize disruption and guarantee user safety.

Earth and Environment

Our Environment team has implemented a rigorous methodological approach to species and habitat relocation, with the aim of minimizing impacts on the natural environment.

We identified compensation needs for the loss of fish habitat, wetlands and ecologically significant woodlands resulting from the REM project.

Subsequently, in collaboration with stakeholders, our team prepared a robust environmental compensation plan, ensuring that each stage of the REM project incorporates biodiversity preservation and ecological restoration measures.

Communication Systems

We have developed an intelligent transportation and communication network based on redundant fibre optic systems, designed specifically for the project’s four railroad lines. This telecommunication network comprises IP routers installed at the main control centre and associated infrastructure, with secondary IP nodes along the tracks and in each station.

The project integrates all essential communication and safety subsystems along the tracks, in tunnels, control centres, stations, bus terminals, parking lots, garages and maintenance buildings.

Infrastructure assets and buildings

Planning the REM project in a complex urban environment was one of our major challenges. Particular attention was paid to the preservation of nearby historic buildings and sensitive areas. Our design team carried out an exhaustive assessment of geotechnical conditions and a detailed analysis of existing structures and infrastructure assets.

These assessments proved crucial to the configuration of stations, tunnels, maintenance buildings and related infrastructure, in order to maintain an optimal balance between functionality, user interface and risk reduction. In close collaboration with our client, we worked to optimize the use of public spaces while minimizing the potential impact of construction on critical structures.

Preserving urban heritage, managing environmental constraints and respecting community needs were at the heart of our approach.

The REM is much more than just a transportation network: it’s a vision of the future for modern, efficient urban mobility.
