Roundabout Construction at Junction of Highways 37 and 44

CIMA+ was tasked by Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) to design a roundabout at the high-collision intersection of Highway 37 and Highway 44. The final configuration was a single-lane roundabout with right-turn bypass lanes, splitter islands, raised medians and speed reduction measures.

On behalf of Alberta TEC, CIMA+ undertook the design of a roundabout at the junction of Highway 37 and Highway 44, near Edmonton, AB, which was part of a larger project. An analysis was undertaken to improve the safety of this intersection, which was previously controlled by four-way stop signs. The collision rate for the intersection was significantly above the provincial benchmark and the recommended improvement option became the construction of a modern-day roundabout. The final configuration was a single-lane roundabout with right-turn bypass lanes in all directions, including splitter islands and raised medians on all four legs to reduce traffic speeds. To accommodate trucks encountering over-tracking and gravel spilling over, the approach angles included more curves to control entry speeds. Furthermore, a speed transition from 100 km/h to 60 km/h with roundabout ahead signage was provided to further reduce speeds.

Based on lessons learned from a nearby similar project, CIMA+ included a conceptual design for a detour in the tender package and the detour became part of the final construction package. This temporary detour allowed traffic to be shifted from the main alignment, to minimize disruptions, increase efficiency and enhance safety.

Construction was completed and the roundabout was open to the public in October 2024.
