Roundabout construction in Sturgeon County in Alberta

CIMA+ was retained by Sturgeon County to design a roundabout at the intersection of Sturgeon Road and Sturgeon Road East. The project was designed in two phases to allow for increased traffic flow as the community grows. Phase 1 of the project features a single-lane roundabout with single-lane approaches and exits.

Sturgeon County recognized the need to upgrade the intersection with a roundabout to accommodate the increasing traffic volume and forecasted development in the area. The County is seeing extensive growth in advanced manufacturing, petrochemicals, transportation, and logistics.

Sturgeon Road and Sturgeon Road East are two of the busiest roadways in Sturgeon County, connecting the local communities to the major highways and destinations in the area. The project area is located approximately 7 km northeast of the city of St. Albert and approximately 4  km from the northern limits of the city of Edmonton. The intersecting roadways serve as major corridors for commuting and transporting commercial goods.

This project involved the development of the roundabout in an interim (1-lane) and ultimate (2-lanes) configuration. The interim (1-lane) configuration was constructed, but the roundabout is designed to accommodate the addition of a second lane in the future with minimal modifications, should the County require increased traffic capacity.

The construction approach began by establishing the roundabout’’s footprint through the definition of the outer curb alignment. Stage  1 focused on constructing the single-lane roundabout within this footprint.
