CIMA+ was retained by the Town to design and construct the new multi-use trail along the south side of Highway 16A between Veterans Boulevard and Campsite Road. This trail connection fills a missing link in the active transportation network between the two communities.
Previous feasibility assessments before CIMA+’s involvement recommended construction of a trail connection along the south side of Highway 16A, a provincially controlled roadway.
Prior to the trail being constructed, there was significant use of the eastbound paved highway shoulder by cyclists between the two communities. The design followed the requirements of the Town of Stony Plain, City of Spruce Grove and Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC). In addition, the presence of a wetland on the south side of the highway led the team to squeeze the alignment of the trail closer to the highway through by the wetland. This helped to reduce the impacts to the wetlands, and also met TEC’s requirements with respect to clearance from the highway.
