Strait of Canso Transmission Crossing

Design and detailing of transmission towers for the Strait of Canso crossing

This project, located in Nova Scotia, consisted of building towers for an overhead transmission line crossing over the 1.5 km wide Strait of Canso to physically separate two existing transmission lines sharing a common tower. CIMA+ designed and prepared the detailed drawings for both the 26 m and 158 m lattice towers.

CIMA+ chose to use a 3D model to facilitate construction and minimize the risk of unplanned works given the very tight project schedule. Used for several aspects of this project, the 3D model proved particularly helpful in developing special details to allow a helicopter to lift the tower pieces, which was a considerable challenge given the weight involved.
