Stéphane Racine — Vice President, Transportation – Bridges, Design, Traffic Monitoring and Maintenance

What are your greatest challenges as a Vice President, Transportation – Bridges, Design, Traffic Monitoring and Maintenance? What do you wish to concentrate on, personally and professionally, over the next few years?

My personal challenge will consist of working with highly skilled and experienced professionals in areas of expertise that are different than mine. My own expertise being in traffic, I need to get acquainted with the specific issues of other disciplines, in order to properly meet the needs of the sector and ensure its growth and development.

On the other hand, my professional challenge will consist of creating a collaborative environment for professionals from various regions in Canada, in order to develop a “border-free” work synergy. This is how we will be able to continue expanding our staff expertise and deal with labour shortage.

What motivates you most in your work?

I have always liked team management, from the very beginning of my career. The happiness of the people in my teams is my greatest source of motivation, but also my greatest concern. Team management requires strong listening abilities and open-mindedness. One must not fear setting their ego aside, and stepping into others’ shoes to understand their concerns. This is how we are able to find solutions that support the creation of user-friendly work environments, because a pleasant work ambiance equates to employees’ well-being, which represents a valuable asset for organizations is 2021.

CIMA+ is a firm where employees’ entrepreneurial talent is encouraged and recognized. Can you tell me how this plays out in your area of activity?

What I like the most of CIMA+ is the freedom of action we have. We are able to push our ideas forward, innovate and implement our vision for the development of our centres of expertise. This flexibility is defined and encouraged by our leaders who are always ready to help us develop and materialize our ideas.

What would you like to pass on to your colleagues and the next generations of engineers?

Your personal journey determines what you will become. There is no beaten path. I would like young engineers to become aware of the wealth of available possibilities, especially in the upcoming years. They need to take the time to acquire multiple skills and realize that there are many ways to get to where you want to go. Take the time to learn and grow. CIMA+ is offering you this opportunity.
