Naturalized Retention Pond – Gatineau

This project involved the construction of two retention basins with a total volume of over 34,000 m³ to meet the City's requirements for the upstream development phases of Phase 70 of the Secteur du Plateau residential complex in Gatineau, Quebec.

In contrast to traditional stormwater systems, naturalized retention ponds function as dynamic ecosystems, fostering wildlife habitats and contributing to the overall well-being of our watershed. These ponds are designed to collect and detain excess stormwater, facilitating absorption by the soil and preventing direct discharge into natural environments, thereby mitigating soil erosion. Our endeavour to construct two such retention basins in the Plateau sector of Gatineau exemplifies the innovative accomplishments of our interdisciplinary team.

Beyond providing a healthier environment for nearby communities, our project encompasses:

  • Pioneering management of invasive alien species.
  • Creation of habitats for migratory birds, bats, and pollinators.
  • Integration of 641 trees and shrubs.
  • Implementation of a natural stormwater filtration system.
