The Bonnington Station had old mechanical relays that had reached their end of life and needed replacement. CIMA+ was mandated to replace the old relays with a newer generation of Schweitzer SEL relays. Transformer protections, 12 kV and 69 kV line protections and feeder protections were also upgraded. All of the old relays were housed in the main central cabinet of the 12 kV switchgear. Therefore, the new relays had to be installed in the breaker cubicles of the switchgear. New cubicle doors were built and installed on site. The protection scheme also needed to be reviewed and arc flash protections needed to be added to the switchgear.
