Draining a large pond to extract an oil reserve located directly underneath

Suncor had to drain a major tailings pond to access and exploit the oil sands reserve located beneath it. This namely meant relocating water supply and water return systems.

CIMA+ helped Suncor organize this major operation by providing the front-end engineering design and the detailed engineering required to decommission and relocate water supply and water return systems and their associated infrastructures. This included more than 25 km of pipelines, 15 light vehicle crossings and over 13 km of graded pipeline corridors.

The CIMA+ procurement team purchased close to $20M of equipment, including slurry pumps skid packages, transformers, motor control centres and magnetic flow meters.
